Client Project Progress
Mar 18th
I realized I haven’t posted any client project stuff up yet. Reason for this is because I didn’t want to post up a load of junk, I’ve been spending a lot of time tweaking the lighting and rendering methods because I don’t have a lot of time to render the sequence so finding the balance between rendering times and quality was really important.
Its only one week until the deadline for this project and I think I’m on track, I currently have 1 minute 35 sec of fully composted footage.
I’ve already learnt loads of new techniques, one for example is the use of Depth of Field. Simon at Hot Knife showed me this great tutorial on how to get realistic lighting but it also shows how to set up Max to export the Z-Depth of an image which can then be used in After Effects to created DOF super fast.
Below is an example of how the theater is looking. This is a high res still taken during the dynamic lighting sequence. You can see how the use of Mental Ray and DOF gives the image more realism. I’m not going for photo realistic renders here I wanted to keep textures simple so rendering times wouldn’t sky rocket also texturing isn’t my strongest point and the purpose of this project is to improve on my post production skills.
More on how I created some of the effects after the break..
Images for SPP3
Mar 18th
For the second part of the SPP3 module I have to submit eight images that reflect my best work. I’ve spent quite a lot of time searching through all my work that I’ve produced over the past three years to find the stuff I’m most proud of. I thought I would include a selection of images from different mediums such as photo, video, 3D etc..
The Images have to be 11cm x 11cm at 300dpi
Here are eight images I have chosen so far..
Style one: One image with enlarged image as background. This works well because the original images were too wide to take up the entire square.
Style two: Straight up image. A little less interesting but it works for these images.
Style three: Seven shots of one project arranged in this order. By having multiple images of one project you get a better understanding of what its about.
Style four: again seven images of one project but enlarged images on the left. I think the theatre project below is my favourite image out of them all.
Please tell me what you think. This is pretty important because one will be printed in the final year catalogue!
Artefact Three
Mar 8th
Third instalment of a ongoing Uni project looking into the key techniques of compositing. This time I looked at 3D camera tracking aka match moving.
This is something that I am fairly familiar with as I did some camera tracking last year for a personal project. This time round I managed to get much better track results probably due to the fact that the shots are clearer.
First part of the video shows the examples of successful camera tracks, second part is a brief run through of the tracking process.

Note that this project was focused on getting a good track and not realism of the final composite, artefact four will focus more on the realism of a composite with the use of HDR maps, texturing etc..
