I have a Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal on its way (very excited) which will hopefully make the footage captured super stable, but in the mean time I found this a cheap and effective mod minimizes the horrible jello/ vibration effect.

I actually tried a few different methods of mounting the camera, the first being this one. Although this did look good, it wasn’t very practical. As the craft picked up speed and vibrated  those springs meant the GoPro would wobble around quite drastically.

I then designed the following mount. This worked really well as there were two points of isolation, however I had used heavy Meccano parts which affected battery life and agility. It was also not easy to remove, to get the legs off for travel, meant nearly completely disassembling the mount…. long.

I was thinking for a while how to create something lightweight, stable, but carried minimal vibration through to the camera.

I found a bunch of places selling the following type of mount, and from the sample footage they seemed to work well. I didn’t want to buy one of these, then not need it once the H3-2D arrived.

I looked for the rubber grommets but couldn’t find anywhere that stocked them online… so I set out to modify the design..

I cut two squares out of some thin 3mm acrylic and drilled a series of holes along each edge. I also drilled two holes to attach the supplied GoPro mount to it. I used bits of foam between the heli and first layer of acrylic. I then fed a shoe lace through the holes on the outer edge giving a bit of slack. Then put expanding ear plugs between the two bit of acrylic. As they try to expand back to their original shape it picked up the slack in the shoelace.

Not the neatest job in the world, but it was really just a quick trial to see if it would work.

Sorry I don’t have any recent footage to demonstrate how effect this is.. but it really does make a huge difference.

Hope this give you some inspiration to try it yourself, it only took me about an hour or so to make.

Happy modding 🙂
